Russia must demonstrate its support for a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine that leads to lasting peace, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today. She made the statement after the virtual summit organized by the United Kingdom with the participation of the leaders of Kiev's allied countries, BTA reports.
"We reiterate our support for Ukraine's ceasefire agreement. Now Russia must demonstrate that it supports a ceasefire that leads to a just and lasting peace," Von der Leyen wrote in a post on the "Ex" platform.
The EC President expressed gratitude to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for organizing the virtual meeting, which was attended by 25 leaders. The main goal of the meeting was to increase pressure on Russia and secure a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.
"In the meantime, we will continue to support the strengthening of Ukraine and its armed forces", von der Leyen stressed, adding: "We will step up Europe's defense efforts through the "ReArm Europe" plan by increasing defense spending".
