At the EU summit in Brussels on March 20-21, Hungary will speak out against Ukraine's accelerated accession to the community. This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Wednesday evening in the Belgian capital at a meeting of the leaders of the parties that form the parliamentary group "Patriots of Europe" in the European Parliament.
„Over the past three years, the war has cost Hungary 2.5 million forints (6,300 euros) per family and household. If Ukraine joined the EU right now, the direct costs in the first year would be 500 thousand forints (1,250 thousand euros) per family. We do not want to take such a risk, so we will stick to our position“, the MTI agency quoted the head of government as saying.
In recent days, Orban has repeatedly warned that Hungary will not allow Ukraine to immediately join the EU, as this would cause irreparable damage to the European economy. In addition, Budapest believes that the Ukrainian authorities have not restored the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia and have not stopped actions that threaten the energy security of Central Europe. Budapest has put forward these requirements when discussing issues of Kiev's integration into European structures. At the same time, Orban noted that in the future he allows the possibility of Ukraine being accepted into the EU if it meets all the requirements for accession candidates.
