A large protest by the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) was held last night near the central Ankara Kizilay Square, BTA reported.
The demonstration was organized after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and many other high-ranking members of the CHP.
The rally was called after the CHP called on the citizens of Ankara to take to the streets to protest against the detentions. The demonstrators are planning to reach the Ministry of Justice.
The protest, in which a huge number of CHP supporters are participating, began in front of the Kemalist formation's district presidency near Kizilay Square. Many young people - members of the youth presidency of the Kemalist formation - joined the rally.
The demonstrators chanted "Resignation for the government", "Resignation, Tayyip", "Shoulder to shoulder", "We continue the fight, this is just the beginning", "AKP will pay" (the ruling Justice and Development Party - author's note), "Cursed be the AKP dictatorship". People also shouted "Mayor Ekrem, you are not alone", "We are Mustafa Kemal's soldiers".
Earlier in the day, another large PKK rally was held in front of the party's headquarters in Ankara.
This evening, a protest was also organized in Ankara by students from the prestigious Middle East Technical University.
The students set off on a march from the university campus towards Kızılay Square, the opposition newspaper "Birgün" reports.
However, the youth were stopped by police barricades.
According to information from "Birgün" the police used tear gas.
