US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that he had spoken to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, to whom he expressed concern about the "instability" observed in Turkey after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Rubio noted that Turkey has domestic political problems and Washington will not comment on them.
"We are watching the same reports that everyone else is watching about what is happening," Rubio told reporters on the plane he was returning from a trip to the Caribbean. “We are certainly concerned about these protests and some of the reporting,” he added.
The top US diplomat added that President Donald Trump had a “very good working relationship” with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan during his first term and that Washington wants to renew that relationship and cooperate with Ankara on a range of issues.
