The US Treasury Department announced that the United States is imposing sanctions on individuals and entities based in Russia that have helped purchase weapons and goods, including stolen Ukrainian grain, for the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group in Yemen, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Among those sanctioned are Afghan businessman Hushang Ghairat and his brother Sohrab, who worked with senior Houthi official Saeed al-Jamal to secure millions of dollars worth of Russian goods destined for Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen.
The purchases included weapons, dual-use goods and stolen Ukrainian grain, the US Department of State said.
“The Houthis continue to rely on Saeed al-Jamal and his network for critical goods that fuel the group's war machine,“ said US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant.
“Our actions today underscore our commitment to limiting the Houthis' ability to threaten the region with their destabilizing activities,“ he added.
