Former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has proposed granting Canada membership in the European Union in response to US President Donald Trump's statements that the country would benefit from becoming the “51st American state“.
“Maybe it will not be fully integrated like all the others, but maybe partially“, the former Foreign Minister said in an interview with the Weser-Kurier newspaper. “In one way or another, Canada is a European country more than some members of the European Union“, Gabriel added.
Trump has repeatedly expressed the opinion that many Canadians support their country becoming the 51st American state. The president believes that such a union would bring economic stability to Ottawa and protect it from external threats, which Trump says come from Russia and China, among others.
