German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is arriving in Poland today for a farewell visit, where he will meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, DPA reported, BTA reports.
During the visit, the two are expected to discuss German-Polish relations, as well as key European and international issues.
The announcement of Scholz's visit was made last week and surprised many. Although the new lower house of the German parliament met for the first time at the end of last month, Scholz, as chancellor-in-waiting, is carrying out his duties during the final stages of his term.
It is unusual for him to make foreign visits in these final days of his term, DPA notes.
Poland is currently in the midst of an election campaign for the presidential election, which will be held on May 18.
Olaf Scholz is expected to hand over the chancellorship to conservative leader Friedrich Merz on May 6. Merz, who will take office after his conservatives won parliamentary elections on February 23, has already said he plans to visit Poland and France on his first day as chancellor.
