Former US President Donald Trump's claim that America did more than any other country to win World War II is "pretentious nonsense". This was stated by the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, News.bg reports.
Earlier this week, Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social that "no one comes close to us in terms of strength, bravery or military brilliance" in both world wars and that the US "did more than any other country, far more, to achieve a victorious outcome in World War II".
Medvedev - former president of Russia and one of the most vocal anti-Western voices in the Kremlin since the start of the war in Ukraine - reacted sharply. His comment comes against the backdrop of attempts by Moscow and Washington to restore their dialogue and seek diplomatic ways to end the conflict.
„Recently, Trump said that the United States made the greatest contribution to the victory in World War II and that he intends to introduce a special holiday on May 8. The holiday itself is not a problem, but his first statement is pretentious nonsense“, Medvedev said.
„Our people sacrificed 27 million lives of their sons and daughters in the name of destroying the damned fascism. That is why Victory Day is ours, and it is May 9! So it was, so it is and so it will always be!“, he was categorical.
