Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Labor Party has won the Australian parliamentary elections, agencies reported, citing exit polls in local media after the end of election day, BTA reports.
The television stations “Seven“ and “Sky News Australia“ indicated that according to initial forecasts, the opposition center-right Liberal-National coalition would not be able to win. Election analyst Anthony Green declared Labor the winner live on Australian television.
The Labor Party has defeated the conservative opposition and will be able to form a government in the new parliament, Green said.
According to forecasts from the public television channel ABC, opposition leader Peter Dutton will not be part of the new parliament. He lost by a margin of 1.7% the race for the parliamentary seat in his electoral district of Dickson, Queensland.
The election ended at 6:00 p.m. (08:00 GMT) in the eastern time zone of Australia, where most of the population is concentrated. Voting in the Western Zone will end at 10:00 a.m.
The election campaign was dominated by issues such as the rising cost of living and the impact of US President Donald Trump's policies on the Australian economy.
