Ukraine has shot down a Russian Su-30 fighter jet with a missile launched from a sea drone - an event that marks the first time in history that a combat aircraft has been destroyed by such a means. This was announced today by the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), quoted by Reuters, reports BTA.
In a statement published on social networks, Ukrainian military intelligence indicated that the operation was carried out by the special unit “Group 13“ and was carried out over the waters of the Black Sea, near the Russian port city of Novorossiysk.
Within the three years since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine has increasingly successfully used air and sea drones to compensate for Russia's technological and numerical superiority.
Ukraine's naval drones, which are significantly cheaper and more compact than traditional warships, have already proven their effectiveness, inflicting significant damage on the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
In December 2024, Ukraine also reported the destruction of a Russian military helicopter with a missile launched from such a naval drone, marking the beginning of a new era in asymmetric warfare.
