The German Foreign Ministry late last night responded to criticism from US Senator Marco Rubio regarding the decision to classify the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a "far-right extremist" organization, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
“This is democracy“, the German Foreign Ministry wrote in a direct response to Rubio's publication. “The decision is the result of a thorough and independent investigation to protect our constitution and the rule of law“, the statement said.
The ministry also emphasized: “Independent courts have the final say. From Our history has taught us that right-wing extremism must be stopped.“
The comment came in response to Rubio's words, according to which Germany should reverse its decision. “Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to monitor the opposition. This is not democracy - this is a disguised tyranny“, he wrote on the social network X.
The criticism was also joined by US Vice President J.D. Vance, as well as entrepreneur Elon Musk. Vance said: “The AfD is the most popular party in Germany and the leading one in East Germany. Now the bureaucrats are trying to destroy it.“ He compared the situation to the rebuilding of the Berlin Wall, “not by the Soviets or the Russians, but by the German status quo“.
Elon Musk shared Vance's post and added succinctly: “Fate loves irony.“
