Presidential candidate banned from voting - 1

The candidate for president of Romania from the “New Romania” party, Sebastian Popescu, appeared this afternoon at a polling station organized at the Rectorate of the Technical University of Civil Engineering in Bucharest, but was not allowed to vote. He announced this himself in a video posted on his official Facebook profile.

“Who has something against me? Why are you punishing me for not being able to exercise my right to vote”, Popescu asks in the video.

He explains that he voted at the same station in both the 2019 elections and the 2024 elections, when he ran for office again, but this time he was not allowed to, arguing that he could exercise his right to vote at the permanent address listed on his ID card. Sebastian Popescu is a native of the town of Balş in southern Romania (Alt County).

The 41-year-old candidate for Cotroceni announced that he had contacted the Central Electoral Bureau and would file a complaint if the case is not resolved.

“I am a candidate for president of Romania who is currently prohibited from voting, from voting by people who do not know the law,” he added.

Sebastian Popescu is the leader of the “New Romania” party, which he founded in 2015. He also ran in last year’s presidential election, winning 0.15 percent or 14,683 votes in the first round. In the 2019 election, he received 0.33 percent of the vote. His priority is the unification of Romania with the Republic of Moldova and the return of the Romanian state treasury from Russia.

In 2006, Popescu graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Timișoara, but after five years of work in the specialty, he enrolled to study journalism. He has two news websites - exclusivnews.ro and recentnews.ro.
