German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has strongly condemned the killing of two employees of the Israeli embassy in Washington, who were shot dead in an attack last night. The news was reported by the DPA agency, BTA reports.
“At this stage, we must assume that there is an anti-Semitic motive“, Merz wrote in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
“I condemn this terrible act in the most categorical way possible“, the chancellor added.
The victims - a young couple - were shot in front of the Jewish Museum in the American capital. The Israeli Foreign Ministry identified them as Yaron Liszinski and Sarah Lynn Milgrim.
According to a statement from the Washington police, the attacker chanted "Freedom for Palestine" when he was arrested. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are looking into the possibility of a hate crime.
