Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that uranium enrichment is a principled and fundamental issue for the Islamic Republic, as well as a significant scientific achievement for Iranian scientists. This was reported by the Iranian news agency IRNA, BTA reports.
In an interview with the Saudi television channel “Ash Sharq“ Araghchi stressed that threats to trigger the mechanism for the automatic restoration of sanctions against Iran have neither legal nor political basis and represent a serious mistake. He warned that European countries will have to bear the consequences if they take such actions.
“We have been subject to sanctions for years because of our uranium enrichment program. The Iranian people have suffered greatly, and our scientists have been killed for their participation in this program. We will not give up on this path,“ Araghchi was categorical.
He added that the current tension is not Iran's fault, but is the result of the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the inability of European countries to compensate for this step. According to him, the possible activation of the sanctions mechanism by Europe would be a “completely illogical and unlawful measure“, the consequences of which will have to be borne by the European countries themselves.
