The number of victims of floods in the eastern Australian state of New South Wales has reached 5, and damage has been caused to over 10,000 properties, Reuters reported, citing the latest information received by local authorities.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said today that emergency services have begun clearing up areas affected by the water element, BTA specified.
"We continue to work closely with local authorities to ensure that Australian citizens receive the necessary assistance to repair the damage," the Prime Minister wrote on the social platform "Ex".
An assessment of the damage caused by the floods is underway in New South Wales state, and 52 successful rescue operations were carried out last night, the state's emergency services reported.
They added that weather conditions were improving. However, hundreds of residents of Australia's most populous state whose homes were flooded are still in evacuation centers.
The latest victim of the floods is a man in his 80s whose body was found in a flooded property about 50 kilometers from Tairy - one of the worst-hit towns, police said. The town is located on the Manning River, about 300 kilometers north of Sydney.
Prime Minister Albanese was scheduled to visit Tairy on Friday, but this visit was canceled due to the impossibility of reaching the town. Floods stranded more than 50,000 people in New South Wales, Reuters recalls.
