Romanian nationalist and former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu announced that he is retiring from politics after the presidential elections.
“The Romanian presidential elections are over. In this regard, I have decided to stop my active participation in the political process. I am now focused on my family“, he said in a video posted on Facebook.
Earlier, the Hotnews portal reported that Georgescu had been summoned to the Romanian prosecutor's office to give evidence following his joint interview with the leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Unification of Romanians, Gheorghe Simion, on the Realitatea Plus television channel. In it, he used quotes from the leader of the legionary movement in pre-war Romania, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu.
After the second round of the presidential election on May 18, Gheorghe Simion received 46.40% of the vote, while his opponent, Nicușor Dan, won with 53.60%. Calin Georgescu won the most votes in the first round of the presidential election on November 24, 2024, but the constitutional court annulled the vote on the pretext of illegal financing of the nationalist's campaign, hacker attacks, and Russian interference.
