Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to arrive in Berlin today for a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, DPA reported, citing information from the magazine “Spiegel“, BTA reports.
According to the publication, the two leaders intend to discuss possible steps towards starting talks of a “technical“ nature between Ukraine and Russia, aimed at a peaceful settlement of the conflict.
The visit has not been officially confirmed by either Kiev or Berlin at this time. As is often the case, such visits by the Ukrainian president are not announced in advance for security reasons, the agency notes.
Berlin police have already introduced extraordinary security measures and restrictions on public transport due to the visit of a high-ranking foreign guest, DPA also reports.
If confirmed, the visit will be Zelensky's first to Germany since Friedrich Merz - leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) - and his coalition government took office on May 6. The Ukrainian president's last visit to the German capital was in October last year.
For his part, immediately after taking office earlier this month, Chancellor Merz visited Kiev, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the prime ministers of Britain - Keir Starmer and Poland - Donald Tusk.
