The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said "hordes of hungry people" stormed one of the agency's warehouses in central Gaza yesterday, killing two people and wounding several others, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
"Gaza needs immediate increase in food aid. This is the only way to ensure that people will not starve," the WFP said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Israel accused the UN of trying to block the distribution of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, while the organization assured that it was doing everything possible to restore supplies of the limited quantities allowed by the Israeli authorities.
"While the UN spreads panic and makes declarations that are disconnected from reality, the State of Israel is continuously facilitating the entry of aid into Gaza through two methods", which at this stage will continue "simultaneously", Israel's permanent representative to the UN Danny Danon told the Security Council.
He was referring to the limited entry of UN trucks through the Kerem Shalom border crossing since the beginning of last week after more than two months of blockade, and the new organization "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" (HFG), AFP notes.
The private company, set up with the support of Israel and the United States, has established a system that the UN considers contrary to humanitarian principles, and chaotic distribution at one of its centers caused 47 people to be injured the other day.
Danon blamed Hamas for the chaos, accusing the Palestinian group of trying to block access to the distribution center with "roadblocks".
And "now the UN is actively siding with "Hamas" in its attempts to block this aid," he added.
"The UN is using threats, intimidation and repression against NGOs that have chosen to participate in the new humanitarian mechanism," Danon said, describing the UN as a "mafia organization".
