A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Northern Greece due to elevated levels of uranium in drinking water, reports the newspaper "Ekatimerini", reports News.bg.
The measures are in force in the regions of Serres, Lefkona and Christos and will continue until June 26. The decision was taken at the request of the mayor of Serres, Varvara Mitliaga.
The local water supply authorities have imposed a ban on the use of tap water for drinking and cooking in the affected areas, which include around 2,000 households. Temporary water supply is provided by water carriers and bottled water.
Mayor Mitliaga said that municipal services are fully mobilized to ensure the restoration of safe access to water and a return to normal daily life as soon as possible.
The source of the uranium contamination has not yet been identified. It is recalled that the first data on elevated uranium content in the water in Serres were reported on May 25, when over 15 thousand fountains were sealed.
