UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believes that it is necessary to stop the fighting between Iran and Israel and to resume serious negotiations on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.
“We must act immediately and decisively to stop the fighting and return to serious and sustainable negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program“, he said at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, convened in connection with the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
“We need a credible, comprehensive and verifiable solution, including full access for IAEA inspectors. Such a decision would restore confidence. The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons is the cornerstone of international peace and security. Iran must comply with it, and all UN Member States must fulfill their obligations under the UN Charter and other international law, including international humanitarian law.“
The Secretary-General of the world organization is convinced that “the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States marks “a dangerous turn for a region that is already in a precarious situation“. Guterres stressed that “from the very beginning of the crisis, he has repeatedly condemned any military escalation in the Middle East“.
