The Al Udeid Air Base is located near the capital of Qatar - Doha. It is one of the most important US air facilities in the region and serves as the headquarters for the air operations of the US Central Command in the Middle East, according to information from the BBC, reports News.bg.
The base is home to about 8,000 US military personnel and is also used by British forces. The base's call sign is Abu Nukhla Airport.
„Al Udeid“ also serves as a logistics base for US military operations in Iraq. It also has the longest runway in the Persian Gulf region, making it key for the rapid and efficient transfer of equipment and personnel.
In 2000, Qatar granted access to the US base. After the US military took over its management in 2001, in December 2002, the two countries signed a formal agreement on the presence of US military personnel at “Al Udeid“.
In 2024, CNN reported that the US and Qatar had reached an agreement to extend the US military presence at the base for another 10 years, underscoring its strategic importance in the region.
