The situation with the fires on the Greek island of Chios is improving, after the efforts of firefighters began to bear fruit. Despite the progress, however, local authorities report serious damage to the forest massif, agricultural lands and parts of the infrastructure, BTA reports.
The fire, which broke out a few days ago in strong winds and high temperatures, caused evacuations in several settlements. Currently, the main priority is to prevent new outbreaks and completely control the flames.
Local authorities and volunteers continue to cool the terrain and monitor to avoid re-igniting the fire. The government promised financial assistance to the affected areas and stressed the need for better prevention in future crises of a similar scale.
