Violent clashes between extremists and migrants broke out in the Spanish town of Torre Pacheco, Murcia region, BNR reported. Five people were injured, one was arrested.
The riots were organized by far-right groups, chanting racist slogans and inciting to “hunt“ foreigners. At 8 p.m., a large number of young people dressed in clothes with far-right symbols gathered in the city center. However, they were confronted by local residents, many of whom are migrants.
Local police and Civil Guard officers have formed a cordon to prevent tension between the two groups. However, in the following hours, local residents and members of far-right groups clashed several times in different parts of the city.
The reason for the tension was an attack on an elderly man on Wednesday, which has not yet been revealed. Immediately afterwards, allegations appeared on social networks that he was attacked by migrants and accusations that the government had failed to ensure safety on the streets.
For days, hateful messages against the North African population have been circulating on social media, targeting in particular Moroccan families in this city in Murcia.
Tensions also occurred on Friday, when a peaceful demonstration was organized in Torre Pacheco against the attack on the elderly man. Civil Guard units have been deployed in the city to prevent further unrest.
