At least two people were killed in a shooting at a church in Kentucky, in an incident that began with the shooting of a state trooper who was injured, the Associated Press and Reuters reported, citing local authorities. The suspected shooter was also killed.
The wounded officer stopped to check a vehicle near the airport, Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Withers said. After shooting the officer, the suspect stole a car and fled to the "Richmond Road" Baptist Church in southwest Lexington and began shooting at people there.
"Preliminary information indicates that the suspect may have been connected to the individuals at the church," Withers said.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been established, was later killed by Lexington police.
Lexington police said the injured officer was in stable condition, Reuters noted.
"Please pray for all affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let us thank the Lexington Police Department and the Kentucky State Police for their quick response," Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said in a post on social media.
One of the attacks took place at the Richmond Road Baptist Church and emergency services were at the scene. provided aid to multiple victims, state police said.
