Russian authorities have canceled a tsunami warning for the Kamchatka Peninsula, TASS reported, citing the Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kamchatka Territory, Sergei Lebedev, BTA reports.
The cancellation of the warning "does not mean that you should immediately go to the beach," Lebedev said in the communication application "Telegram."
This morning, a powerful earthquake was registered off the coast of Kamchatka, the magnitude of which, according to some estimates, reached 8.8. It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Russian region since 1952.
The authorities of the Sakhalin region also said they had canceled a tsunami warning they had issued.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there were no casualties from the earthquake near Kamchatka, Reuters reported.
