Normalization between Russia and the United States will take time, as the momentum from the unprecedented deterioration of relations that occurred under President Joe Biden is still very high, Russian President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov told TASS.
He noted the “unprecedented deterioration“ of relations between Moscow and Washington under Biden.
“Of course, there is momentum in this process,” he said, commenting on the long absence of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and current US leader Donald Trump. “It takes time for attempts to normalize bilateral relations to be realized.“
Six months and 16 days have passed since the new US president took office, but there has still been no personal meeting between him and his Russian counterpart. During Trump's first term, it took five months and 18 days for the two leaders to meet.
Since his election, the current US President Donald Trump has demonstrated a desire to normalize relations with Russia. The new US leader has called the prospect of a meeting with Vladimir Putin important, but, as the Kremlin has emphasized, the summit should be the result of a lot of bilateral work, not precede it. Nevertheless, the leaders are in constant contact and have had six telephone conversations since the beginning of the year.
