Taliban mark four years in power - 1

The Taliban are celebrating four years since their return to power in Afghanistan today, Agence France-Presse reported. Parades are planned in several cities, including the capital Kabul, which the movement seized on August 15, 2021, BTA reports.

The Taliban government has been officially recognized by Russia and expects other countries to follow suit. However, it remains largely isolated from the international community, which has sharply criticized its strict policies for implementing Islamic law and restrictions on women.

Earlier last month, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for two Taliban leaders over their repression of women. Afghan women are banned from attending universities, gyms, beauty salons and parks, as well as from practicing a number of professions.

In addition to Russia, the Taliban government maintains close ties with some Central Asian countries, China and the United Arab Emirates, AFP notes.
