US President Donald Trump announced after his summit with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that he will receive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office of the White House on Monday afternoon, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
“If everything works out, we will schedule a meeting with President Putin“, Trump said. Earlier today, Zelensky also said he would travel to Washington to meet with Trump on August 18.
“The best way to end the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to move directly to a peace agreement that ends the war, not just a ceasefire agreement,“ Trump has now said.
Earlier today, he spoke by phone with Zelensky and leaders of European countries to update them on what he had discussed with Putin in Alaska. The European leaders then held a telephone conversation with Zelensky and will publish a joint statement.
European leaders have prepared a joint declaration after assessing the information provided to them by US President Donald Trump about yesterday's meeting in Alaska with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and after hearing the opinion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said today.
"The conversation between European leaders, who assessed the information provided by President Trump and the results of the meeting in Alaska, has ended", Tusk wrote on the social platform "Ex". "Together with Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, Giorgia Meloni, we listened to Zelensky's opinion and prepared a joint declaration," he added. Tusk did not specify when the declaration would be released.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni said after phone calls earlier today with the US president, the Ukrainian president and other European leaders that there was finally a glimmer of hope for peace in Ukraine, ANSA reported, BTA reported. Italy is contributing along with its Western allies, Meloni added. These were her first comments since Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
