German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful today called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire as a condition for a planned bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
During a visit to the Japanese naval base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, Wadeful said that after the constructive meeting at the White House between US President Donald Trump, Zelensky and several European leaders “someone has to make a move. And that person is President Putin.“
The German foreign minister stressed that a peace agreement would require solid guarantees for Ukraine's security.
“We and the Americans are ready to provide them“, said Vaddeful, adding: “One thing is clear: the guns must finally fall silent.“
When asked what these guarantees might be, he replied: “Together with the US, we as European partners are ready to provide these security guarantees and to ensure their effectiveness.“
However, Vaddeful specified that first Putin must be ready “to negotiate in a really serious way and, above all, to agree to a ceasefire.“
According to him, the security guarantees must be solid enough “so that Ukraine can "It is confident that it is safe and will not be attacked again."
"Then Ukraine will have to carefully consider what negotiations it will conduct and what outcome it can accept," the minister added.
Vadeful described the agreement reached with Trump on the participation of the United States in providing these security guarantees as a crucial step, calling Washington's participation a fundamental prerequisite for their effectiveness.
