US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said trade talks with China are going very well after the world's two largest economies recently extended a truce in their bitter trade dispute over tariffs, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
"China is currently the largest source of tariff revenue", Besant said in an interview with "Fox News". "We had very good talks with China, I guess we'll see each other again before November," the Treasury Secretary added. "I think the status quo is working pretty well right now," Besant said.
Last week, Washington and Beijing postponed imposing new three-digit tariffs on each other's goods for another 90 days.
The two sides initially declared a truce in their trade dispute in May after talks in Geneva. They agreed then to postpone planned tariff increases for three months while negotiations continued.
Representatives from Washington and Beijing met again in Sweden late last month, after which US negotiators returned to Washington with a recommendation to President Donald Trump to extend the deadline for the new tariffs again.
Washington has been urging Beijing to stop buying Russian oil as a means of pressuring Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. But on Friday, Trump said he had no immediate plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on China in light of ongoing peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump and Putin met in Alaska on Friday, and three days later the US president hosted Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and other European and NATO leaders at the White House.
Trump is preparing a bilateral meeting between Zelensky and Putin, and later a trilateral summit between Russia – Ukraine – the United States.
