Indonesia's anti-corruption agency has arrested the country's Deputy Labor Minister Immanuel Ebenezer in connection with an investigation into alleged extortion, „Reuters“ reported, News.bg reports.
Ebenezer, a member of the ruling Gerindra party of President Prabowo Subianto, became the first member of his cabinet to be detained on suspicion of corruption.
President Prabowo, who was sworn in last October, has been campaigning against corruption both inside and outside government institutions.
According to Fitroh Rohkahyanto, deputy head of the anti-corruption commission, the arrest was related to an investigation into irregularities in the issuance of safety permits by the ministry. No further details were released.
Last year, Transparency International ranked Indonesia 99th out of 180 countries in its Corruption Perceptions Index.
