Western countries have 30 days to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis, said today the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaia Kallas, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reported.
"We are entering a new phase of 30 days (...), which we must use to find diplomatic solutions," she said before the start of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen, a day after the Europeans decided to trigger the mechanism for restoring international sanctions against Iran within a month.
This request is to be considered today by the UN Security Council.
France, Germany and Britain indicated yesterday in a letter to the Security Council that "based on factual evidence" consider that Iran is in significant non-compliance with its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal and invoke the mechanism that launches a 30-day process allowing the re-imposition of a number of sanctions that were suspended ten years ago.
The European Union, which supports the 2015 agreement, is participating in the negotiations between the three countries and Iran, specifically in Geneva, where a final meeting took place this week before the decision, which was ultimately announced yesterday, AFP notes.
