Russia launched a massive airstrike on Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region overnight, where Kiev admitted for the first time this week that the Russian army had made a breakthrough, regional governor Serhiy Lysak said, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.
"There are explosions. Strikes were made on Dnipro (Dnipro in Ukrainian - ed.) and Pavlograd", two important cities in the region in the central part of the country, Lysak wrote on "Telegram", urging residents to take shelter.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force warned of a cruise missile aimed at the area.
The governor of Zaporizhzhia region Ivan Fedorov also reported explosions and posted on "Telegram" a photo of a burning house in the regional center, the city of Zaporizhia, and also mentioned power outages.
"The Russians hit the city with at least three drones," he specified.
Three people were injured in the attack on Zaporizhia, local officials reported, quoted by the UNIAN agency.
On Tuesday, Ukraine acknowledged for the first time that Russian troops had entered the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Moscow claims to have made progress since July.
The Russian army currently controls about 20 percent of Ukrainian territory, but the Dnipropetrovsk region is not among the five Ukrainian regions that Russia has announced it intends to annex, AFP reports.
