US President Donald Trump told European leaders that Europe should stop buying Russian oil because it finances the war against Ukraine, a White House spokesman said, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.
Trump joined the meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing" in Paris, chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron, where guarantees for Ukraine's security in the event of a peace agreement with Russia were discussed.
„President Macron and European leaders called President Trump during the meeting. He stressed that Europe should stop buying Russian oil because it finances the war - Russia has received 1.1 billion euros in fuel sales to the EU in within a year“, the spokesman said.
Trump also called on European leaders to put economic pressure on China for its funding of the war waged by Russia. The US president has expressed disappointment at his failure to stop the fighting in Ukraine since taking office, stressing that the war is not his and that Europeans must also take action.
Among the participants in the virtual meeting were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The White House spokesman noted that Trump questioned the seriousness of the intentions of European leaders, as they continue to support Russia's economy and, accordingly, the war.
