Germany will allocate 10 billion EUR by 2029 to develop the civil protection system as part of its largest modernization program in recent decades, promised German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
„We are modernizing the civil protection system... 10 billion EUR will be allocated by 2029 for the largest modernization in the field of protection against natural disasters, crises and conflicts“, the head of the Interior Ministry told the newspaper „Bild“.
This program could become the largest in recent decades, the article says. As part of this, the authorities intend to purchase new warning systems, including sirens and mobile phone technology, expand the network of shelters, conduct more crisis exercises and develop crisis-proof digital communications between civil protection organizations and the Bundeswehr, the publication writes.
According to the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK), there are currently only around 480,000 public shelters in Germany. This means that only half a percent of Germans can find shelter there.
