We lack at least 2 thousand midwives - 1

Today is the International Day of Midwives. It is celebrated in over 50 countries around the world. In Bulgaria, the data in the National Professional Register indicate that there are over 3,700 midwives. But their shortage in health facilities is permanent, reported BNT.

There are several universities in our country where the specialty is studied. But hospital figures show the system is short of at least another 2,000 midwives. However, in the "Mother's Home" hospital there are always people willing to learn. The average age of active midwives here is around 30 years old. But the lack of personnel is felt in the capital hospital as well.

"There certainly is, and perhaps one of the reasons for this is the low pay in general, but a midwife starting to learn the profession itself and understand what midwifery really is, falls in love and certainly cannot give up this", Shukrie Boshnakova, a midwife in the delivery room at SBALAG “Machin dom”, is categorical.

The midwives from "Mother's Home" they share that every case that passes through them, they remember and experience it. Fortunately, the smooth births outnumber the complications.

"We experience everything daily. It was more difficult, more complicated as a case, and for now I hope all patients are okay and they are okay," said Anna-Maria Velkova, a midwife in the delivery room at SBALAG "Mother's Home".

For midwives, today's holiday is important because they hope that through it society will think about the importance of their profession.

"You are responsible for two lives, let's start with that. It includes being very ambitious, responsible, dynamic, knowledgeable, capable, wanting to know more and more," explained Anna-Maria Velkova, a midwife in the delivery room at SBALAG "Mother's Home".

The midwives from "Mother's Home" they wished to be able to welcome more and more healthy babies in the future.
