"The Director of the Sofia Waste Treatment Plant Nikolay Savov has been summoned for questioning by the prosecutor's office". This was announced in a Facebook post by the deputy mayor for ecology of Sofia, Nadezhda Bobcheva, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio.
"The next one summoned is me, the topic is unknown", she also writes and gives a background to the garbage crisis:
"In the midst of the waste crisis – on the days when our entire team is on the ground to ensure the cleanliness of the city – the two people on whom the management of the situation depends to the greatest extent, we are subjected to another portion of institutional pressure.
While Sofia is trying to control a problem created by the refusal to succumb to extortion and accept Sofia residents paying a "corruption tax", the prosecutor's office decides to intimidate and prevent us from fulfilling our duties.
Months ago, the enterprise that today keeps the capital's districts "Lyulin" and "Krasno Selo" clean was subjected to endless inspections. When we discovered hazardous hospital waste and alerted the prosecutor's office, no one reacted. And today, when we refused to betray the interests of the people, this same prosecutor's office, whose interests we all know it serves, is calling us in for questioning.
Less than a week after Mayor Terziev mentioned the statesman's name with a capital "D" on national airwaves.
I don't know what the subject of these proceedings is.
But I know what the real question before all of us today is - is there a place for integrity in Bulgaria. Can a person stand up against the powerful and preserve themselves without compromising their principles.
Mr. Savov and I know why we are in these positions and what principles we stand for. We are here to serve the people of Sofia, to keep the city clean and to protect the interests of the citizens. That's why we won't give in.
Fear is part of every difficult moment, but not of the decisions we make. Because when fear rules, freedom dies. And we choose to serve a free Sofia - not fear".
