After Maya's Run-Over: Protest in Front of Military Medical Academy Demands Stricter Punishments for Animal Abuse

A man and woman from Pernik are on trial for filming pornographic animal abuse videos. A woman tried to push a puppy off a bridge in Plovdiv

A protest under the slogan: "Justice for Maya" demanding stricter punishments for animal abuse will be held at 4:30 p.m. in front of the main entrance of the Military Medical Academy, BNR reported.

The reason for the civil discontent is that a man ran over a dog in the capital. Due to the severe injuries caused, the animal was euthanized.

Earlier this week, the Military Medical Academy, where Dr. Nenad Tsonevski - the man who ran over the dog - works - announced that it was banning the doctor from exercising his official duties until the case is clarified.

Yesterday, the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office accused Tsonevski of intentional cruelty to the animal.

A petition is circulating on the Internet, signed by over 220,000 people, demanding a full, impartial and transparent investigation into the case with effective implementation of the Criminal Code, which provides for penalties for cruelty to animals.

People are demanding legislative changes that would strengthen sanctions for intentional actions that led to the death or suffering of animals.

District Prosecutor's Office – Pernik filed an indictment against 26-year-old Gabriela Sashova and 35-year-old Krasimir Georgiev, who were suspected of animal cruelty, causing death in a particularly painful way and creating pornographic materials, NOVA reported.

This is clear from a statement by the Appellate Prosecutor's Office - Sofia to the media.

Their actions became public in the spring of this year, but have been under investigation for much earlier. We recall that the charges are related to torture and killing of animals, which the man and woman distributed online for payment in cryptocurrencies. For this purpose, they created a channel in the Telegram application, where they published videos and offered “custom“ clips upon request of clients from abroad.

The activities of the two defendants cover a period from March 2023 to December 2024 and include numerous pieces of evidence – computer-technical, DNA and psychological examinations. They remain in custody, and the court is yet to schedule a hearing on the case.

During the search operation at addresses in Pernik, Sofia and other towns, computers, phones, money, as well as objects used for torture were seized - including the clothes the woman was wearing in the videos.

An elderly woman tried to push a puppy off the Gerdzhika Bridge in Plovdiv, FOCUS reported, citing a reader.

"I slowed down the car and saw that the woman was trying to push the puppy between the bars of the bridge," he said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

"It was a small brown dog. At first I saw that the woman had bent down and I thought she had felt sick. I slowed down and then I saw how she pushed the animal. It was backing away, and she was pushing it forward," the reader said. According to him, it is not clear whether the puppy fell into the water.

"I managed to stop right after the bridge and ran to the scene of the accident. When I got there, the woman was gone. I didn't see if the dog fell into the water. I hope it's okay," the reader added.
