Sofia is extending its metro network by another three kilometers under “Vladimir Vazov“ Blvd. by the end of 2026. This means that by 2027, after the large-scale expansion in the “Poduyane“ area (a total of 10 new stations), Sofia will have a metro network larger than that of Warsaw.

The final phase of the construction of the new extension of the Sofia metro under “Vladimir Vazov“ Blvd. has been announced. The 3 km long section will be officially put into operation by August 1, 2026, connecting key eastern districts of Sofia with the city's unified transport network. This was stated by the municipal councilor from “Yes, Bulgaria” Simeon Stavrev.

“Currently, construction activities on the route are 85% to 93% complete. The tunnels are fully completed, finishing works are being carried out on the three new metro stations at the “Georgi Asparuhov“ stadium, on “Vitinya” street and the “Gen. Vladimir Vazov“ municipal complex in the Levski G district. “ The new section will serve over 45,000 passengers daily, providing a direct connection to the residents of the districts.

With the construction of the new stations, Sofia's metro network continues its impressive growth. By the summer of this year, our capital will have 47 stations and 52 km of route, serving about 470,000 passengers every day – an increase of 120,000 trips per day compared to 2023. By the end of 2027, with the completion of the large-scale expansion in the “Poduyane“ area (a total of 10 new stations), Sofia will have 61 km of total route and 57 metro stations, which will make the metro network larger than that of Warsaw.

In the long term, the development of the metro continues with the planned expansion in the “Lyulin“ residential area (two new stations) and a future route to Studentski Grad.

It is estimated that after the completion of these stages, 50% of all trips in the capital will be made by metro, which will lead to a significant improvement in air quality and traffic relief. It is planned to reduce harmful emissions by about 200,000 tons per year and 11,000 fewer cars on Sofia's streets every day.

At the same time as the metro expansion, two new buffer parking lots are being built: for 100 cars on “Vladimir Vazov“ Blvd. and for 220 cars on “Tsarigradsko Shose“ Blvd. in the area of the District Hospital.

In parallel with the construction, the Sofia Municipality is actively replacing old Russian trains with modern compositions. The delivery of 8 new “Skoda“ trains is underway, and a new delivery of 16 additional locomotives is expected.
