„For all the years of existence of independent Croatia, there was only two mandates (8 years) of the government of the Social Democrats, during all other periods there was dominance of the Croatian Democratic Community, and since 2016 it has been quite successfully led by Andrej Plenković.“
This was stated in the Euronews Primetime studio by Prof. Dr. Naum Kaichev, professor of Balkan history at the University of St. Kliment Ohridski“, who is also the vice-chairman of the joint historical commission between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia (RSM).
The Croatian prime minister has experience with this kind of incomplete victories. In 2016, he also won 61 out of a total of 150 seats in the parliament, but this time it will be a little more difficult for him because HDO was on the rise and now its electoral support is declining.
“There are very complicated negotiations ahead. It will be more difficult for him, but it is still expected that he will form a government”, added Prof. Kaichev.
According to him, the right-wing conservative "Homeland Coalition", which has performed well and has a close profile to Plenković's party, but on the other hand, is negative towards Serbia and the participation of the Serbian minority in the previous government, seems to be a natural coalition partner of the HDO. without whose support, however, such a government would not have a majority.
Associate Professor Kaichev also commented on the upcoming elections in the RSM. He stated that he expects results that will hardly provide a clear solution to the problems facing the country.
“Even if the pro-Belgrade opposition VMRO-DPMNE party achieves a more decisive victory, it will again need the support of the Albanian political bloc, and the positions of the Albanian parties are clear and decisive – for acceptance of the so-called French proposal also for the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution of the RSM“, Prof. Kaichev pointed out.
“The pre-election rhetoric is again directed against Bulgaria”, he added.
Prof. Kaichev also drew attention to the inefficient implementation of the protocols, part of the so-called French proposal, according to which there should also be common celebrations of historical events and personalities from the common history of Bulgaria and the RSM.
