A unique Roman-era sarcophagus was discovered on the beach of "St. St. Constantine and Helena"

A former policeman discovered a sarcophagus with rich relief decoration on the beach, the police said.

The man reported the find on July 23. The sarcophagus was discovered on the beach of the resort "St. St. Konstantin and Elena“, not far from a newly built but still non-working complex.

An inspection was carried out in the presence of specialists from the Archaeological Museum and a representative of the regional structure of the DG “Inspector for the Protection of Cultural Heritage” to the Ministry of Culture.

According to the opinion of the experts during the initial inspection, the cultural value is from the Roman era, with rich relief decoration, probably from the period II-III century AD, with approximate dimensions of 90 x 235 x 75 cm.

Its four sides are decorated with characteristic relief stylized ornaments - garlands with hanging bunches, animal heads, rosettes, labris /double-edged ax and others.

With the help of firefighters and heavy equipment, the artifact was transported for storage in the Archaeological Museum in Varna. Appointment of expertises is pending.

The case has been reported to a prosecutor and an investigation is underway.
