Over 300 settlements in our country are on water regime. Nearly 500,000 people are affected. Checks show that water reserves in the dams have decreased compared to last summer. In our country, there are already reservoirs at 2 percent of their useful volume.

A few days ago we warned about problems in the level of the “Koprinka” dam. And they, it turns out, are becoming more and more. According to official statistics, the reservoir is just over 13% full. Organizations and experts have announced that there is a danger of a mass fish die-off, which will lead to an ecological disaster. For the moment, there is no danger of a water regime in Stara Zagora.

„A plan has been drawn up regarding the supply of water to farmers. All stakeholders in the chain are aware of the situation. I have spoken to the head of the office of the Prime Minister, the management of “Irrigation Systems” - Sofia and the Minister of Environment and Water, Petar Dimitrov. Measures are being taken, from today a mobile laboratory will be on site to monitor water quality, oxygen levels and anything that could lead to a mass plague of fish. So far, there are no such concerns,” he said on the air of “Hello, Bulgaria” the regional governor of Stara Zagora Metodi Markov.

„An increase in the Earth's temperature by one degree leads to a 7 percent decrease in the amount of water that is available. There should be a single agency or body that deals with the management and management of water in our country. Let me remind you that 10 years ago, thanks to the actions of the World Bank, there was a strategy for the development of the water sector. It was stated that 12 billion BGN were needed for the period at that time, which would be used mostly for new water sources and liquidation of water losses. It was planned that 30-40 percent would come from the EU, and the rest from the national budget. This did not happen,”, Assoc. Prof. Borislav Velikov claims.

According to him, we should look for new water sources, the aquifers in the Balkans and new boreholes, although the level of underground water is falling.

„Indeed, Bulgaria has a serious problem with the coordination of water management. It is not a matter of simply creating a structure and making it a “hat” to the others. In the last year, there was serious talk about how to protect the water in the rivers and lakes. Including innovative solutions - to build floating solar power plants that reduce evaporation from water bodies”, explained Julian Popov, former Minister of Environment and Water.
