A huge glacier collapse in southern Switzerland has partially destroyed the small village of Blatten, which was completely evacuated last week due to the impending danger, dariknews.bg reported.

A huge collapse of the Birch glacier occurred at around 3:30 p.m. local time, emergency services in the Valais region reported.

Many of the houses in Blatten, where about 300 people live, have been destroyed, the Swiss news agency Keystone-ATS reported.

The glacier collapse had been expected for several days.

Footage posted on YouTube shows a huge cloud of ice and debris descending the mountainside and into the valley where the village is located. Debris has reached houses.

In recent years, glaciers in the Alps in Europe have been retreating due to warming, which most scientists say is due to climate change.

Swiss glaciers, heavily affected by climate change, melted in 2022 and 2023. as much as between 1960 and 1990, losing a total of about 10% of their volume.

The amount of snow covering Switzerland's glaciers at the end of this winter was 13% less than the average for the period 2010-2020, a group of glacier monitoring experts reported in early May.

A young woman died on Wednesday in the Adriatic Montenegrin resort of Budva while parasailing, falling from a height of 50 meters into the water, Montenegrin media reported.

According to "Viesti" it is a citizen of Serbia.

Witnesses say that immediately after falling into the water, the young woman was taken by boat to the city port, where an emergency team declared her dead. An investigation is underway.

Parasailing is a recreational activity in which a person with a parachute is towed by a motorboat, usually over the sea or a lake. As the boat accelerates, the person rises into the air and flies above the water, attached to a metal rope connected to the boat.
