US President Donald Trump joked with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez about their disagreements on military spending, the Spanish news agency EFE reported, quoted by BTA.

In his closing remarks at yesterday's Gaza meeting in Egypt, Trump addressed Sanchez directly, who was present at the event: “Am I managing to convince him on defense spending? I'm getting closer. I'm doing a fantastic job. Spain? Where is Spain?“, the US president said while looking around the hall.

Trump's words brightened the mood of the otherwise serious ceremony dedicated to the signing of the Gaza ceasefire. The US president made the comments while congratulating world leaders who have been involved in brokering peace in the Middle East.

While Trump's remarks were humorous, they echoed his long-standing criticism of NATO members who fail to meet their military spending targets. In recent months, he has repeatedly criticized Spain for "not paying enough" to the alliance.

His friendly tone toward Sanchez contrasted with his previous, more pointed statements, such as his suggestion that countries that "don't pay their fair share" could be expelled from NATO.

"Spain is a great country. Pedro is a good guy - we'll get along," Trump said with a smile as the audience laughed.

The Spanish prime minister did not respond publicly at the event. Diplomatic sources said Trump's comments were received "in a spirit of cordiality."
