The UN Security Council adopted a resolution proposed by the United States to lift sanctions against Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa, just days before his visit to the White House, Focus reports.
The approved resolution excludes Ahmed al-Sharaa and Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab from the sanctions list related to ISIS and “Al-Qaeda“. The measure was supported by 14 Security Council member states, while China abstained.
After the vote, the Syrian authorities expressed gratitude to the UN for approving the document. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani wrote on the social network X that Syria appreciates the support of the United States and “friendly countries“, stressing that the decision shows “growing confidence in the president's leadership“.
It was previously reported that on November 10, the Syrian president would visit Washington for a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
