Israel has reopened the Zikim crossing for trucks carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, the Israeli Defense Ministry's administrative body responsible for supporting the Palestinians, KOGAT, reported, quoted by Reuters, as quoted by BTA.
In an official statement, the service specified that the measure was taken "in accordance with political directives". The humanitarian aid will be distributed by the UN and international organizations after thorough checks by border guards.
UN humanitarian agencies have been calling for all border crossings to be reopened, especially for the delivery of aid to the northern part of the Palestinian enclave, following the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement last month.
According to OCHA, the border crossing was closed on September 12, and no aid shipments have passed through since then. Israel has not commented on the reasons for the closure.
However, some essential goods have reached northern Gaza through southern Gaza during the closure, but this support has proven insufficient. Last month, an international monitoring organization officially declared that the population in northern Gaza and the surrounding area is starving.
