King Charles III announced last night that his doctors could reduce the intensity of his cancer treatment in the new year.

He called the moment a “blessing“ and proof of remarkable medical progress, Reuters reported.

Charles, 77, was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer in February last year and made the announcement today in a televised address as part of a national campaign in Britain to raise awareness of cancer.

“I can share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and strict adherence to medical advice, my own cancer treatment schedule can be reduced in the new year,“ he said. “This stage is both personal "a blessing and testament to the remarkable progress that has been made in cancer treatment in recent years," he added.

His public comments about his cancer experience and his health are unusual for the royal family, which traditionally does not reveal much about the private lives of its members.

Tests found the tumor after a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate, Buckingham Palace announced in February 2024. At the time, the palace said it would not provide regular updates on his treatment and did not give details about the type of cancer.

After some time away from the spotlight, Charles, who ascended the throne in 2022, returned to public duties in April this year with a busy schedule of ceremonies, public appearances and foreign trips.
