The war in the Middle East continues to be a leading topic in the Western press, BTA reported.

US President Donald Trump said that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer "is not Churchill" after Starmer did not allow American fighter jets to use the island of Diego Garcia as a base for attacks on Iran, writes the British edition of the "Times".

The British newspaper also focuses on the information that the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the Israeli-American attack on Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been elected the next Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

Another British newspaper - The Daily Telegraph also draws attention to Trump's criticism of Starmer and the American leader's words that the British Prime Minister is good at ruining relations.

In just 48 hours, the American president sent the Iranian navy to the bottom of the sea, the Daily Telegraph also writes, noting that this conclusion is based on what is seen in satellite images.

Prime Minister Starmer made the right decision not to involve Britain in the war against Iran, writes in turn in an editorial in the Independent.

As is often noted, Sir Keir Starmer is a lawyer by profession, so he can be expected to show respect for international law and insist on its observance when he can, notes the Independent. In addition, he is a professional and extremely pragmatic politician.

The British publication points out that Starmer's decision not to involve Britain in the conflict was probably based on the legal opinion that a serious military attack by one country against another, when there is no imminent threat of aggression, is illegal, violates the UN Charter and represents a return to the dangerous principle of "the right of the strong" in the settlement of international disputes.

"The Independent" acknowledges that the attack on Iran is far from the first such attack in history, but expresses the opinion that it was unusually blatant and unceremonious. Unlike the multinational invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, this time there were no attempts by the US and Israel to obtain UN authorization to carry out the operation.

V. "The Guardian" draws attention to the US statements that they have hit nearly 2,000 targets since the start of the war against Iran. The British publication also dwells on the statement of the US armed forces that in the first 24 hours of the war, the fighting was almost double the scale of those against Iraq in 2003.

V. "New York Times" indicates that today in Iran the funeral ceremonies begin for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was at the head of Iran for more than three decades. The American publication also highlights the information that Khamenei's son - Mojtaba, is a leading contender to succeed the murdered supreme leader.

V. "Mond" writes about yesterday's address by French President Emmanuel Macron - the first address by a French head of state dedicated to the situation in the Middle East.

The French publication quotes the president as saying that "Iran is primarily responsible for this situation". Although Macron justified the intervention of the US and Israel, "Le Monde" notes, he expressed regret over the fact that the military actions "are being carried out outside the framework of international law".

"Le Monde" commented that one of the main announcements Macron made in yesterday's speech was that he had ordered the French aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" to be deployed to the Mediterranean Sea.
