The leader of the Democratic Party in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, called President Donald Trump's letter to end the war against Iran “nonsense“.
“This is nonsense. This is an illegal war, and every day that Republicans remain complicit and allow it to continue is another day that lives are endangered, chaos occurs and prices rise. Americans are paying the price“, he wrote in X.
Earlier, Trump announced in his message to Congress that the military actions against Iran, which began on February 28, have ended, as the two sides have not exchanged blows since April 7. He also noted that “despite the success of the US operation“, the threat posed by Iran remains “significant“.
The letter was sent on May 1, as the military campaign against Iran entered its 60th day. This is the deadline until which, according to the 1973 resolution, the US president can use the armed forces abroad without congressional authorization.
It is assumed that Trump's goal in declaring the end of the war is to secure another 60 days in which he can unilaterally make decisions on military intervention without the need for congressional approval.
