At least 70 kilograms of cannabis were found in the home of the mayor of the French city of Avalon in the central part of the country, and searches are continuing, reported BFMTV, quoted by dariknews.bg, citing gendarmerie sources.
strong>"At least 70 kilograms of cannabis were found on Sunday, April 7, in the possession of the mayor of Avalon Yon, Jamila Absaoui," French television sources said, "Focus" reported.
The drugs were found in the annex to the town hall as part of one of the operations against the distribution of narcotics that had previously been launched in several cities in France. Before that, law enforcement officials found that the politician's brother was selling prohibited substances, the TV channel also reported.
This week, the French authorities launched large-scale operations to combat drug trafficking in three major cities - Toulouse, Strasbourg and Nantes. Previously, similar operations began in six cities: Paris and a number of surroundings, Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Clermont-Ferrand and Dijon.
Law enforcement officers made more than 1,700 arrests, twice the stated goal. Earlier, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that the police intended to detain 850 people suspected of involvement in drug trafficking.
